Arsene Wenger keen to sign Mainz forward Szalai.
Arsenal are looking to bring in Mainz forward Adam Szalai, according to German newspaper Bild.
The north London club are still looking for a replacement forward following the departure of former captain Robin Van Persie to rivals Manchester United in the summer.
Arsene Wenger is looking to bring in attacking reinforcements after summer signings Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud failed to convince him they deserve a regular starting berth in the Arsenal line up.
That has left Wenger ready to swoop for Hungarian international Szalai, who joined the German club from Real Madrid’s B team in 2010.
The player initially struggled for form but has been hitting the back on regular occasion this year, collecting an impressive record of nine goals in seventeen games for the Rhineland side.
It is unclear if the move will be enough to satisfy Arsenal fans. They have been crying out for a big name signing for some years, and Wenger must be aware of the risk of signing such a relatively unknown player.
While Szalai is likely to be cheaper than many of the alternatives, if the player fails to replicate his good form for Arsenal and Champions League qualification eludes them, fan impatience is likely to reach new highs.
