Gunners mull over move for Napoli’s Cavani.
Arsenal are reportedly on the verge of submitting a £30 million offer for Napoli’s highly-rated centre-forward Edinson Cavani.
The North Londoners have been keeping close tabs on the Uruguay international for some time now, even sending chief scout Steve Rowley to Naples last November to watch the player in action.
Rowley told Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to push ahead with plans to bring the 25-year-old to the Emirates, although the one major stumbling block remains the Serie A club’s huge valuation of the striker.
Cavani only just signed an improved five-year deal with Napoli last May, meaning that if the Gunners wish to persuade his employers to part company with the deadly forward, then Arsenal will need to stump up at least £30m to convince the Italians to do so.
However, with the club in danger of not finishing in the top four of the Premier League for the first time in Wenger’s 17-year tenure in London, and with it entry into next season’s money-spinning Champions League, the pressure is very much on to find a proven goalscorer to fire the team up the table, something Wenger himself acknowledged after the FA Cup third-round replay with Swansea City.
“Cavani is a player that I like. What is for sure is that he costs a lot of money,” Wenger told reporters.
