The left back has been undeniably shaky since he moved to Arsenal for around £6 million at the end of the summer 2011 transfer window, though has had the odd flash of brilliance.
Against the Chelsea team of Andre Villas-Boas – now manager of Gunners rivals Tottenham Hotspur of course – Santos had a torrid first half.
In the second, he went gung ho, often the furthest player forward, and scored a fine finish past Petr Cech in the Blues’ goal.
He also helped Arsenal to third place in the Premier League last season with a critical goal against West Bromwich Albion in their final match of the campaign, and his goal against Olympiakos helped the Gunners win their UEFA Champions League group.
Besides that, it is tricky to think of another highlight in his career at Emirates Stadium, and it is notable that none of his memorable moments (at least in a positive sense) have been for his defensive prowess.
Fenerbahce fans had a much higher opinion of Santos than their Arsenal counterparts, and the Gunners will likely be grateful of whatever fee they can get for the Brazilian.
Given that they have little time to find a replacement, Arsenal will hope that Kieran Gibbs’ recent injury free run continues until the end of the season.
Santos gave further hint at a transfer with the publication of a photo of himself in a Fenerbahce kit on his Instagram account, below, with the caption: “I’ll never forget , thanks for everything ;))”
