Bundesliga star on radar at Emirates Stadium, and Germany international could come at a bargain price.
Arsenal are well known to have money to spend this January, and Benedikt Howedes is the latest name to be linked with the club.
The FC Schalke 04 star’s contract expires in summer 2014, and the Gelsenkirchen club have so far been unable to agree terms on a renewal.
Howedes is a versatile defender, able to fill in comfortably at either centre half or right back, and would be a significant upgrade on the departed Johan Djourou and likely departing Sebastien Squillaci.
The Germany international is more of a technical player than many defenders, and is quite capable of dribbling his way out of trouble when required.
His one downside is that in the last few years he has suffered a succession of muscular injuries that have left him sidelined for up to a month at a time – something that could well trouble the notoriously criticised Arsenal medical team.
Still, should he be unable to agree terms on his new contract, Arsenal could find themselves with a bargain this January transfer window.
