Is Arsene Wenger playing mind games in attempt to bring Napoli ace to Emirates Stadium?
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger feels it would be very difficult to sign SSC Napoli forward Edinson Cavani, but is willing to spend money on the right player.
“I like him as a player,” said Wenger in yesterday’s press conference.
“Will he cost a lot of money? That’s for sure. Nobody would deny that. Our banker lives just next to me at the moment and he is ready if we find the right player.
“We can spend the money that we have decided to spend if it is for a player we think gives us a plus. But I do not want to speak about Cavani because we have not made an inquiry for him.”
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis certainly has no intention to sell, citing his rejection of a huge bid in the past – thought to be from Manchester City last summer – as proof.
“For Cavani I was once offered 55 million Euros, and I said no. I need him, not the money,” said De Laurentiis.
“I am confident in his professionalism.”
British newspaper journalists were later granted further audience with Wenger, and picked up on his quotes regarding the Uruguay striker.
“You speak about Cavani… Napoli are playing for the championship and the Champions League [places] in Italy.
“What is the interest of Napoli to sell Cavani? None. Unless you come there and say, ‘OK, we pay twice the price of what the player is worth’.”
When asked if he’s started thinking about how to replace Cavani, De Laurentiis had an interesting response.
“Let’s see what happens and then we’ll decide what’s best. Napoli have never disappointed Neapolitans, I’ve always done my job with a sense of duty and commitment.”
As Arsene Wenger says, “the prices go always up at the start of the transfer market and go down in the last week.”
“Sometimes as well you are right they go up in the last week but it depends.
“Most of the time they go down in the last week and you know as well that 90 per cent of transfer activity happens in the last week if not in the last 48 hours.”
Perhaps Arsenal fans will rather enjoy the latter stages of the January transfer window.
