Arsenal fans receive welcome boost for second half of the season – but how long will he stay fit?
Arsenal’s midfield will welcome back Abou Diaby shortly, as the France international is edging closer to full fitness.
26 year-old Diaby took part in an Under-21 match against West Bromwich Albion earlier today, and fans of the Gunners are now waiting for club manager Arsene Wenger to utter the famous words, “his return will be like a new signing.”
Diaby has struggled to maintain full fitness ever since he arrived at the north London club in January 2006, with his first serious injury occurring five months later in the form of a severe ankle fracture thanks to a bad tackle.
In seven seasons at Arsenal, Diaby has made 117 appearances in the Premier League – or an average of just under 17 per season.
Given that there are 38 games each Premier League campaign, it shows that Diaby has taken part in under half of his side’s league games since joining the club.
There are plenty of Gunners supporters who would like to see Arsenal cut their losses with Diaby, but when he is fit, he demonstrates what a great player he could be.
The Frenchman bossed the midfield against Liverpool at Anfield, for example, and received gushing praise from every UK newspaper for his performance.
Injury soon struck though, and Diaby was again ruled out.
Now he is back though, Arsenal will hope he can rule the midfield once again – particularly with a big game against Manchester City coming up this Sunday.
