Arsene Wenger’s side, who recently lost 2-1 at Chelsea to slip further behind in the race to finish in the top four this season, know they must beat their London rivals, however, the Frenchman maybe without the likes of Francis Coquelin (hamstring), Mikel Arteta (thigh) Abou Diaby and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in midfield, although Lukas Podolski is expected to return in time to face the Hammers.
“Coquelin is out because he has a hamstring problem from the Chelsea game,” Wenger confirmed in his pre-match press conference.
“Everybody else has to be assessed today individually but there is no major injury.
“We could have Podolski back in the squad because he is back to full training today. And maybe Chamberlain back in the squad because he has been sick but maybe he will go out today and practice.
“We have [an issue in defensive midfield], I agree with you. It is a position where we are short and anyway we are short when Arteta is not there because he is a player with a lot of experience, he gives us stability and you could see that in the last two [Premier League] games. It is a position where we are a bit vulnerable at the moment.
“Diaby is one of the guys I will have to check today. He started, you could see he was not completely physically fresh from the start on and he did dig deep on Sunday to do what he did. he played four games on the trot after being out for three months, so I will have to check him today.”
