Arsenal retain hope Spain forward will choose Emirates Stadium switch.
Arsenal face a battle to sign Athletic Bilbao forward Fernando Llorente after his club revealed Juventus have confirmed they want to sign him in the summer.
A statement on the Athletic Bilbao website read:
“Juventus Football Club has reported on January 3rd 2013 at Athletic Club that as Fernando Llorente will be out of contract on June 30th 2013 at our club, they will now begin negotiations with the player to bring him to their team.”
Still, whilst Juventus are the favourites to sign the Spain international striker, the door is very much open for other clubs to make a bid themselves.
Until Llorente signs a pre-contract with Juventus, he is allowed to negotiate a move elsewhere – either in the summer on a free transfer or in the current transfer window for a fee.
Of course, Juventus could also be negotiating to sign him this month too.
Arsenal are believed to be amongst the interested clubs, with Anzhi Makhachkala also circling.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is known to be keen on Llorente, but may elect to retain faith in newly converted centre forward Theo Walcott – as well as Olivier Giroud, who possesses many of the same attributes as Llorente.
Juventus have made their move. It is now up to them to resolve financial terms with Fernando Llorente as soon as possible – and before any other club can swoop in.
