The newspaper claims that the Gunners’ Italian based scout Tony Banfield has watched the 21 year-old Brazilian a number of times, and has implored Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to sign him.
Jorginho’s team Hellas Verona are not the most prestigious team in the city – that honour goes to rivals Chievo Verona, known by the affectionate nickname of ‘The Flying Donkeys.’
Indeed, Hellas Verona currently play in Serie B, and Arsenal fans may not be particularly impressed that when their team desperately needs reinforcements that could slot in immediately to the first team, instead their scouts are trawling teams below the top flight to find a bargain.
Still, it is a policy that has served Arsene Wenger well in the past, and in recent years the likes of Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Carl Jenkinson are just a few Arsenal recruitments to have come from the second tier of English football in the last few years.
Like top midfield target Mohamed Diame, Jorginho has a £3.5 million release clause, but his is exclusively for clubs outside Italy.
The 21 year-old has not earned a cap for Brazil, but his Italian citizenship means a work permit would not be an issue.
