Arsenal earmark Toulouse ace as man to liberate playmakers in midfield.
Arsenal are looking at signing Toulouse star Etienne Capoue, with Arsene Wenger reportedly believing he is the man to take charge of the Gunners’ midfield.
In recent weeks, teams have seemingly worked out that by marking Mikel Arteta out the game, they could then shut down Arsenal.
Wenger naturally has had to come out with a solution to this problem, and Etienne could be it.
A more pure defensive midfielder than Arteta, Capoue would free the likes of Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla to do what they do best.
Arteta would also be able to play a more creative role in the team, as since moving from Everton he has gradually become a holding player.
Given that Wilshere and Cazorla in particular have played almost every game they’ve been able to for the Gunners, it would allow them to occasionally be rotated with one being rested and the other selected in the attacking midfield role for certain games.
Etienne Capoue is a player in the Patrick Vieira mould. He can sit in front of the defence, but also drive forward and create if opportunity allows for it.
Abou Diaby of course could be that player – and has displayed it on occasion, particularly against Liverpool earlier this season – but injuries have continually hampered him.
Add Capoue to the mix though, and Arsenal could have the physicality and drive long missing from the Gunners’ team.
