Defender may elect to stay put ahead of Emirates Stadium move.
Arsenal will have to move fast if they are to sign Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld – the 23 year-old has just been offered a new deal by the Eredivisie giants.
Alderweireld was heavily linked with a move to either Arsenal or Tottenham Hotspur last month, though talk of a transfer has quietened down recently.
“When the time is right, I’ll change teams, but for now Ajax is the most important thing”, Alderweireld was quoted as saying by Bold.dk in December.
“Ajax is a very good club. It will be hard for me not to play here all my life and if I have to choose between Ajax and another club, there are not very many [to pick].
“But clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham, they are great clubs and they would be a step forward.”
Alderweireld is a Belgium international – another player in a squad considered to be somewhat of a ‘Golden Generation.’
He most often plays as a centre back, but can also fill in at right back when required – which could be a useful quality given Arsenal’s recent injury worries in the full back positions.
Still, with his contract expiring in summer 2014, Ajax are keen to tie him down before his price tag decreases.
“Alderweireld and Eriksen have received offers from Ajax”, said the Amsterdam side’s manager Frank De Boer.
“I personally hope they stay at Ajax for longer.”
