Spurs had been linked with a surprise swoop ahead of the Gunners for Spain international striker Villa in the UK media, but head coach Andre Villas-Boas swiftly denied any interest.

“At the moment I have told you that we are willing to take a risk on Jermain Defoe’s injury. Defoe played 90 minutes and played very well.
BBC football reporter David Ornstein – known for having good contacts within Arsenal – said tonight on BBC Radio 5 Live that Arsenal still hope to sign Villa, but have backup transfer targets if they fall through.
Although publicly both Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and Barca chiefs have issued strong denials that Villa would move on from Camp Nou this January, there remains hope for the Gunners as the player himself is reportedly very keen on the move.
This evening, David Villa would have made his 100th appearance for Barcelona – but was an unused substitute. A player of his ability – and Spain’s record top goalscorer, no less – has a right to expect first team football.
That could well come his way at Arsenal – who would suddenly become favourites to reach the UEFA Champions League if he signed.
