The cash-strapped Ligue 1 giants had offered the Gunners the playmaker on loan for the remainder of the season, in a bid to remove his £85,000 per week wages from their books.
But the France international has told Lyon he only wants to move permanently, and Atletico Madrid are now in pole position to snatch the 27-year-old from under Arsene Wenger’s nose, according to Spanish daily AS.
However, Atletico are struggling to match Lyon’s asking price at present, which could see the Gunners enter the bidding before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Lyon chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is holding out for close to the £18m they paid Bordeaux for Gourcuff in 2010, with Atletico willing to pay just half that fee.
Gourcuff has been a peripheral figure for the French club this term, starting just seven match in Ligue 1 thus far.
