The Magpies had a £7m bid accepted by Montpellier for the centre-half and the Toon were expecting the player to arrive at St James’ Park for a medical on Monday.
But the 22-year-old did not show up, sparking fears that the player is holding out for a move to North London outfit Arsenal.
Newcastle have already lost France international Loic Remy to Premier League rivals QPR and it is understood that the club hierarchy are fearful of another embarrassment should the Gunners match their bid for Yanga-Mbiwa.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Arsenal have been in touch with Montpellier but are yet to make a formal bid.
Versatile Yanga-Mbiwa starred last term as Montepellier claimed a shock Ligue 1 title win and the Central African Republic-born defender made his debut for Les Blues last year.
