Wenger: It’s my way or the highway…
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits that he has struggled in the transfer window this summer, but confirms that he will never work under a director of football, reports the Mirror.
The Gunners have endured a miserable summer in the transfer market, failing to bring in any of the multiple marquee players they have targeted; most notably Gonzalo Higuain, Luis Suarez and Luiz Gustavo.
On the other hand, fans have watched their north-London rivals Tottenham, who employ Franco Baldini as a director of football, spend over £100m on a string of impressive new players.
Wenger though, will not accept any help.
“I would not work with a director of football because they buy the players and when it does not work you are guilty for not using them well,” said the 63-year-old Frenchman.
“I am not against having people to help me buy, sell and negotiate because I cannot do it all. But I think the final decision always has to belong to the manager to decide who comes in and who goes out because he is responsible for the style of play and results,” added Wenger, whose Arsenal side take on Tottenham at the Emirates on Sunday in a mouthwatering Premier League derby.
The French boss did accept however, that this summer has been difficult for both himself and the club.
“I cannot deny the transfer window is a problem for me because it conflicts with a period where the competition has started already and I need big focus on the competition,” Wenger continued.
“It’s not as easy any more because the market has become more open and international. There are more contenders, but not more players. I always want to be in a position where I do not have to buy.”
Arsenal could step up their pursuit of Schalke’s 19-year-old German prodigy Julian Draxler, who would cost enormous money, or Chelsea’s Spanish playmaker Juan Mata – but only if the 25-year-old hands in a transfer request to force a move from the bridge.
