Premier League duo eyeing cut-price deal for Spaniard.
Arsenal and Liverpool are among the favourites to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes in the summer, according to reports.
Valdes, 31, has been with the Catalans since 1995, making over 550 appearances for the La Liga giants, but announced on Thursday that he had decided not to renew his contract at the Nou Camp.
“The agents of Victor Valdes have informed FC Barcelona today about the irrevocable decision not to renew his contract,” read a statement on the club’s official website.
Valdes’ contract expires in 2014 but Barcelona are almost certain to listen to offers for the Spaniard this summer, rather than lose him on a free the following year.
Bayern Munich, who announced that former Barca boss Pep Guardiola would take over as head-coach in the summer, have been linked with the 10-cap Spain international but the Bundesliga giants already boast Manuel Neuer, widely considered to be the world’s finest goalkeeper, and Valdes would unlikely settle for a place on the bench.
It is understood that Premier League giants Liverpool and Arsenal are both keen to land Valdes in a cut-price deal in the summer.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger is on the hunt for a new number one after reportedly losing faith in Polish international Wojciech Szczesny and the North London outfit have been linked with Birmingham’s Jack Butland and Liverpool’s Pepe Reina.
Reds manager Brendan Rodgers, meanwhile, reportedly believes that Reina has gone stale at Anfield and wants to add an experienced new custodian to his squad.
Rodgers regards Valdes, who boasts a World Cup, three Champions League medals and no less than five La Liga titles, as the perfect replacement for his compatriot and the player is thought to be keen to play in the Premier League.
Chelsea vs Arsenal tickets are now on sale for the London derby at Stamford Bridge on January 20th.
