Gunners scrap plans to bring winger to the Emirates Stadium.
talkSPORT understands Arsenal have dropped their interest in Wilfried Zaha – because Theo Walcott is set to sign a new deal.
The Gunners were keen to land the Crystal Palace youngster as a replacement for Walcott, who was set to leave the club at the end of his contract this summer.
But reports have emerged from the Emirates that the former Southampton winger is ready to agree a new deal, having had various requirements met, and that has opened the door for Manchester United to sign the Eagles star.
Arsenal remain in the market for other targets this January though with Demba Ba, David Villa and Arda Turan all linked to the north London club.
Rumours linking Arsenal with a move for Crystal Palace youngster Wilfried Zaha are gathering pace, aided by a mischievous tweet from a fake twitter account professing to belong to former Eagles midfielder Tom Soares.
Young, quick and technically gifted, Zaha is certainly the kind of player Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger typically targets, particularly now the Frenchman is keen to build a squad of with a core of British players – a far cry from the days when the North Londoners would line-up without an Englishman in the eleven.
Wenger is also no stranger to buying promising starlets from the Championship and below and has successfully plucked the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott from the below the top-tier.
But the above source suggests that Arsenal are ready to abandon a move for Zaha – because Walcott is set to finally commit his future to the club.
It seems strange logic, particularly now that Walcott, 23, has been granted the central striking role he desperately craves.
Zaha, by contract, is an out-and-out right winger and if Walcott is ready to sign on at the Emirates Stadium, it means Wenger has promised the former Southampton star continued playing time up-front.
With this in mind, it would make sense to target Zaha, who would replace Walcott on the wing, where Gervinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have struggled for goals and assists so far this season.
