Anthony Joshua continues his progression at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday night, and he takes on a step up in opposition in the form of Matt Skelton.
The 24-year-old is 6(6 KOs)-0 in his professional career thus far, with his last outing coming at Wembley on the undercard of the Carl Froch vs George Groves rematch back in May.
However, the Olympic gold medallist has received some criticism for the lack of talent his opponents have shown, but in wily old veteran Skelton, he will expect a much tougher test.
The 47-year-old began the war of words after suggesting that his rival could be the next Audley Harrison, and he is keen to ensure that everyone knows that he isn’t travelling to Liverpool for a pay-cheque.
Skelton has had 36 professional fights and will look to use his experience to counter the size, strength and power that Joshua possesses, but ultimately he knows that in heavyweight boxing anything is possible as one punch can change the whole complexion of a fight.
Meanwhile, Joshua concedes that he would potentially like to use this fight as an opportunity to get some rounds under his belt and gain more experience after dispatching of all his previous opponents inside the distance.
However, if the opportunity presents itself to finish off Skelton, back the Londoner to get the job done and move on to bigger and better fights in the future, with October 11 at the O2 Arena pencilled in for another display this year.
Elsewhere on a packed bill on Saturday night, both Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew will feature as they look to stay on course to set up a rematch later this year with the latter claiming that he will go out to end his rival’s career when they meet.
