It is a remarkable turnaround for Crolla after he feared for his life and future in boxing after being attacked by burglars at the end of last year.
Fortunately, he was able to make a full recovery, but it didn’t happen without seeing his initial title shot against Richar Abril cancelled in January.
However, promoter Eddie Hearn has insisted throughout the process that ‘everything happens for a reason’, and we may well find out on Saturday night what that reason is.
Crolla has been fortunate enough to secure an immediate world title shot after recovering and returning to the gym to work with trainer Joe Gallagher over the past few months.
While he was clearly delighted on the scales on Friday as he made the weight, it now remains to be seen whether or not the ordeal he has been through has any lasting physical or mental impact on his ability to perform in the ring.
Furthermore, Perez is no walkover and the 31-year-old is arguably the most difficult fight that Crolla could take in the division in his return to the ring.
Nevertheless, with a raucous home crowd backing him to win, ‘Million Dollar’ will be hopeful of realising his dream of becoming a world champion on what is expected to be a memorable night for British boxing.
Prediction: Crolla to win on points. The home fighter’s work-rate will give him the advantage and he will hope to push the pace and put pressure on his rival from the offset.
Fighters are expected to ring walk at around 22:30.
