It proved to be a thrilling race with one of three former champions, Kauto Star, Denman or Imperial Commander, looking likely to take first place until the last half mile, when Long Run, who was the 7-2 favourite, jumped to the front of the pack at the last minute to claim gold.
Speaking after the race, jockey Sam Waley-Cohen said: "He's a whole lot better than I thought he was. That's a very special feeling and he's a very special horse". Denman finished the race in second position, while Kauto Star completed the top three.
Long Run made his British racing debut in December 2009 at the Feltham Chase on Boxing Day. Jockey sam Waley-Cohen becomes the first amateur jockey to win in 30 years.
