British number one Elena Baltacha hailed her mental fortitude to save four match points on the way to beating Roberta Vinci in the BNP Paribas first round.


Vinci, the world number 37, was serving at 5-4 in the second set. But Baltacha put on a gutsy performance to win 2-6 7-5 6-2.


Baltacha is ranked 74th in the world.
