West Ham striker Carlton Cole has pulled an April Fools' joke on twitter, catching out many national news websites.

The England striker announced on his Twitter site to say he had been dropped by the Hammers for this weekend's crucial clash with Manchester United 'for certain reasons'.

'Got into training feeling good to find I'm not in the squad for this weekend due to certain issues can't say too much at the mo,' he said.

When asked to expand as to why he'd been 'dropped', he added: 'Don't wanna make the situation worse. Gonna still train hard and be ready for the next match.(sic)'

At least one national newspaper's website published the story, but took the report down around 30 minutes later when Cole tweeted: 'Haha I'm just playing. They can't hold me down. Coyi (Come On You Irons)'
