Billy Elliot tops the Tony Awards nominations

The musical adaptation of the British film, Billy Elliot, has received 15 nominations (including Best Musical) at the Tony Awards, the American stage equivalent to the Oscars.
The storyline of Billy Elliot is based on a coal miner's son who works his way to earning a place at a top ballet school.
Billy Elliot The Musical moved to Broadway last November after starting at London's West End.
The 15 nominations for Billy Elliot equals the record number of nominations in the history of the Tony Awards, which was originally set by The Producers in 2001.
The nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical is shared out between the three leading young actors for Billy Elliot:David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish.
Sir Elton John is nominated for Best Original Score for Billy Elliot alongside Dolly Parton for 9 to 5: The Musical.
Billy Elliot'sStephen Daldry, who directed the original film, is nominated for Best Direction of a Musical at the Tony Awards following his nomination for Best Director at the Oscars for The Reader starring Kate Winslet.
Some critics felt that some British actors such as Mackenzie Crook, Kristin Scott-Thomas and Daniel Radcliffe, deserved nominations for their performances on Broadway but were left out.
The winners of the Tony Awards will be announced on June 7.
